Washington Post Executive Editor Sally Buzbee has announced that National Editor Matea Gold will be promoted to managing editor, a role in which she will oversee several major newsroom departments.

As national editor, Gold currently leads a staff of more than 150 journalists who break agenda-setting news and deliver investigative and feature coverage of the country and a wide range of topics, including national politics, the federal government, national security, the judiciary, immigration, race, health and science.

She has spearheaded some of The Post’s most distinctive journalism, including an investigative series about the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol that won a George Polk Award and a Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting and was part of the package that won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Under her leadership, the National department’s coverage won two Pulitzer Prizes this week, one for National reporting and another for Feature Writing.

After the completion of several ongoing projects, Gold will take on her new role in September. Until then, Deputy Managing Editor Barbara Vobejda, who has held key reporting and editing positions at The Post since 1984 and is retiring this fall, will serve as interim Managing Editor.

Gold’s appointment rounds out the Post masthead which includes Senior Managing Editor Cameron Barr and Managing Editors Krissah Thompson and Justin Bank.

“Matea is one of the most respected journalists and beloved colleagues here at The Post, and I am thrilled that she is stepping into a greater leadership role for us,” Buzbee said. “Her vision, ambition and commitment to excellence will benefit teams across our newsroom.”

Since Gold took the helm of the National department in January 2022, she has overseen an expansion of ambitious coverage across the country. She launched a new democracy team and visual enterprise team, deepened on-the-ground coverage in California and Texas and oversaw revelatory reporting on the fall of Roe v. Wade, U.S. support for Ukraine, the fallout of the pandemic, the 2022 midterm elections and the start of the 2024 White House race, among other consequential storylines. Under her guidance, The Post published a seven-month examination of the role of the AR-15 in America, a penetrating exploration of the cultural, political and business forces that have propelled the weapon to the center of the gun debate.

“It’s an incredible privilege to join the leadership team of The Post and to continue to carry on the values that make this such an exceptional news organization,” said Gold. “This is a dynamic, ambitious moment for the newsroom, and I’m excited to help shepherd all the great journalism that is to come.”

Previously, Gold ran The Post’s national political enterprise and investigations team for four years, a role in which she led coverage of the special counsel investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 campaign, former President Donald Trump’s Ukraine pressure campaign and his attempt to subvert the 2020 election results. Before becoming an editor, she spent two decades as a reporter, joining The Post in 2013 after a 17-year career with the Los Angeles Times.
